Start your vegetable garden in 4 easy steps

Vegetable gardening can be a healthy source of food and a very therapeutic hobby. Most vegetable gardeners have found that they do not only have the privilege of eating their own produce, but also finding a healthy hobby of spending time with nature. You might have seen television programs and magazines teaching people how to create a vegetable garden. However in reality, it is really not that easy. These programs and magazines have limited spaces and time to give you everything you need to know in order to make an excellent vegetable garden. But you don't have to worry. If you are serious about starting your own vegetable garden, here are the five essential steps that you should take.

Prepare the location

Finding an empty lot or backyard can be a nice place to start your garden. The location does not need to be large. A 10x10 foot lot is enough to start your vegetable garden. What you can do is to maximize the space that you have. There are different strategies on how to do this. First is to divide the space into little patches or squares to maximize all the spaces that you can take, as opposed to the traditional way of plotting a long row of plants. You can find books that will teach you detailed strategies on how to do this so you don't really need to worry if you have a small patch of land. What are essential to your location are these; sunshine, water source and the soil. There are ways on how to deal with water and soil, so finding the spot where there is enough sunshine is the main thing that you should think about. After finding the perfect spot, you can now start 'making' your garden.

Till the soil

Most yards do not have the necessary soil requirement to plant vegetables. The first thing that you should do is evaluate your soil. Take a soil sample and ask a local university or garden store to test it for you. Plants grow best in loam soil. Loam soil's consistency is just enough to lock in moisture and enough to let the plants 'breathe'.

If your soil does not meet the ideal type, you can work on it to fit your need. You can either buy loam soil in your local garden store or make your existing soil into one. The latter is obviously more difficult and time consuming. The disadvantage in buying loam soil is that the natural soil in your garden has not been transformed into an agreeable soil for your plants. People who buy loam make raised beds in order to keep the loam soil intact. Usually they make wooden boxes and place it on the ground and pour in the soil they bought.

Making your backyard soil into loam takes time and patience. What you have to do is to plow at least 6-12 inches of topsoil and mix some compost and organic matters into it. Imagine you are baking and you need the proper consistency of the dough to get that perfect cake. That is how this works too. You also need to remove stones and other solid objects to ensure that your plants can grow properly.

Pick the vegetables and start planting

The surest way to know what are the best varieties to plant is by going to your local garden store and ask about it. You can also make a list of your most favorite vegetables and start trimming it down to five to ten items. After this, you can start planting your most favorite vegetable. Remember that different varieties have different spacing requirements and different growing stages so be sure that you know how to deal with them when you start planting.

You can either try planting seeds or seedlings. Some plants require to be planted using seeds while some are best planted as seedlings. You can buy seedlings in your local garden store or make your own.

Watch it grow

Taking care of the plant once it is growing is as crucial as the early days when you just planted the seedlings. Be sure that they have enough water and sunlight everyday. You can add organic fertilizers and pesticides to ensure your plants will grow healthy and your produce beautiful. Adding mulch to reduce weeds also helps the plants so make sure that you have them. You can choose to apply chemical fertilizers but the best fertilizers that you can have are organic matters and animal manure. In this way, you can ensure that all your produce are chemical free and more nutritious.

These are major steps that you should take. If you are not sure about some specific details, do not hesitate to ask questions to your local garden store or look for books that will give you detailed information. But remember that expertise is not the only requirement to start a successful vegetable garden, having the heart and the passion to do it is surely more important.
